PFAS solutions for waste management

Halt the bioaccumulation of PFAS in our environment through innovative waste management.

Forever chemical cycle

PFAS are circulating across the U.S., contaminating our environment and forcing passive receivers to confront these harmful pollutants. Heartland provides a comprehensive PFAS solution, empowering you to take control and eliminate these persistent chemicals for good.

Assured PFAS separation & destruction

Heartland's solutions include separation and concentration of liquid phase waste streams as well as assured thermal destruction for solid streams.

Landfill Leachate

Landfills, as passive receivers, must manage and contain PFAS to prevent its spread into the environment. Heartland’s PFAS separation and concentration technology handles liquid waste streams, creating a concentrated residual ready for safe disposal at the landfill or destruction—ensuring effective PFAS management and environmental protection.

Biosolids

The US generates over 4.5 million tons of biosolids annually while traditional disposal methods such as landfill disposal and incineration decline due to PFAS concerns. Destroy PFAS on-site and end the cycle.

Industrial Wastewaters

As industries continues to navigate the regulatory path being forged by PFAS, concentrating wastewater on-site makes residual products more efficient to manage and dispose of.

GAC/IX

Bluefield Research forecasts that drinking water utilities will spend nearly $13.5 billion on PFAS retrofits over the next 7 years, with most dedicated to installing granular activated carbon (GAC) filtration. Destroy PFAS in the residual product on-site and end the cycle.

Benefits of on-site PFAS destruction

Transporting PFAS waste increases risk and cost. Heartland eliminates those issues by treating PFAS compounds at the source. On-site PFAS treatment offers a safer, more efficient alternative that aligns with both regulatory and operational goals.

Key benefits include:

  • Permanent destruction: Destroys PFAS molecules rather than simply relocating them to another site, eliminating the long-term risk of re-release into the environment.
  • Eliminates off-site dependency: Reduces reliance on external facilities with limited capacity or tightening PFAS acceptance policies.
  • Reduced liability: On-site destruction removes the need to haul PFAS chemicals, minimizing the risk of spills, releases, and downstream contamination.
  • Lower cost of compliance: Avoiding off-site disposal reduces third-party handling fees and supports predictable budgets.
  • Improved public trust: Communities prefer local PFAS treatment because it limits exposure to polyfluoroalkyl substances and shows commitment to safety.
  • Regulatory readiness: Addressing PFAS contamination at the source helps organizations comply with EPA regulations and prepare for future CERCLA enforcement.
  • Waste liability mitigation: Eliminating transportation cuts the potential for being named a Potentially Responsible Party (PRP).
  • Support for closed-loop treatment models: On-site PFAS removal enables sustainable waste management and strengthens long-term remediation plans.

Heartland’s approach supports cost control, compliance, and environmental protection. Our solutions offer a direct, dependable response to the growing PFAS challenge.

Regulations are Forcing Change

Efforts to regulate PFAS are escalating at state and federal levels. The EPA has set legally enforceable maximum contaminant levels (MCLs) for certain PFAS in drinking water, while many states have established their own regulations.

Additionally, the EPA has classified some PFAS as hazardous substances under CERCLA and proposed several hazardous constituents under RCRA. These regulations drive the need for effective PFAS management solutions.

Precision PFAS testing

In Heartland's PFAS solutions testing, the following methods have been utilized respective to feedstock type:
  • Method 1633
Analysis of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) in Aqueous, Solid, Biosolids, and Tissue Samples by LC-MS/MS
  • OTM 45
Other Test Method 45 (OTM-45) Measurement of Selected Per- and Polyfluorinated Alkyl Substances from Stationary Sources
  • 537 Modified
Method 537.1 Determination of Selected Per- and Polyfluorinated Alkyl Substances in Drinking Water by Solid Phase Extraction and Liquid Chromatography/Tandem Mass Spectrometry (LC/MS/MS)

The Heartland advantage in PFAS management

Heartland offers targeted PFAS management technologies designed for both biosolids and leachate. HelioStorm™ is a high-temperature destruction technology that reaches 10,000°C, effectively destroying PFAS in biosolids. Heartland LTC Dry™ works in tandem with HelioStorm™ as a pre-treatment step, preparing biosolids for complete thermal destruction. For leachate, Heartland’s Concentrators separate and isolate PFAS compounds for secure containment—this process is independent of HelioStorm™.

Heartland uses a Build-Own-Operate (BOO) model across all its PFAS solutions—including HelioStorm™, LTC Dry™, and Concentrators. With this approach, Heartland owns and operates the infrastructure, so clients don’t need to invest capital or dedicate internal staff. This model provides a turnkey solution that serves a broad range of industries, such as landfills, wastewater treatment facilities, and recovery plants handling PFAS-contaminated feedstocks.

Unlike large, centralized technologies, our footprint is distributed. We build scalable systems for small to medium-sized waste streams. That flexibility allows us to serve more customers and deliver faster results.

Clients trust Heartland because we provide more than technology. We deliver full-system PFAS treatment backed by operational support and transparent results. Our approach helps organizations comply with PFAS regulation and respond to testing requirements with confidence.
